Epitalon (Epithalon) description 

Epitalon is a synthetic peptide, telomerase activator, and putative anti-aging drug developed by the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology in Russia. Most studies on epitalon were carried out by this institute, mainly under the supervision of Vladimir Khavinson, its discoverer. From a chemical point of view, Epitalon is a tetrapeptide with the amino acid sequence Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly and the molecular formula C14H22N4O9, based on a natural peptide called epithalamin extracted from the pineal gland. Many animal and human clinical studies performed for more than 35 years show that Epitalon, a substance that is biologically identical to a substance produced by the body, can significantly prolong the ability of cells to replicate and prevent their aging. 

DNA and Telomeres

The unique composition of each organism is determined by the double-stranded DNA in the nucleus of our cells. Telomeres are located at the tips of DNA strands and prevent the loss of genetic information due to chromosome truncation that occurs with each cell division. Each time a cell divides, its replication is incomplete and telomeres inevitably shorten. The higher the frequency of cell division or the greater the presence of oxidative stress, the more the telomeres shorten until the cell ages at a critical size.

Therefore, telomeres can be considered as biological clocks that ultimately signal the onset of aging in the body and ultimately death. However, there is an enzyme called telomerase that can reverse the process of telomere degradation, allows the production and growth of telomeres, as well as DNA repair. The problem is that telomerase production decreases over time. If telomerase could be activated, cells could potentially exceed their critical “time limit” and continue to replicate. We would thus avoid one of the obviously more necessary mechanisms of aging.

Research and Epitalon effects

Indeed, the tetrapeptide Epitalon is able to reactivate the production of telomerase in cells, thus repairing telomeres and rejuvenating the whole body as a whole by directly acting on the source of aging. Professor Khavinson’s research on elderly or senile individuals showed that biopeptides improved physiological functions as a whole and reduced mortality by almost 50%.

From the age of three months until natural death, mice were given epitalon for five consecutive days each month. 108 mice were divided into two groups, one receiving epitalon and the other placebo. Epitalon treatment has been shown to reduce the frequency of chromosome abnormalities in bone marrow cells, and in particular to increase the lifespan of recent survivors by 13.3% and maximum lifespan by 12.3%. Compared with the control group, treatment with epitalon prevented the development of leukemia. The results of this study suggest that epitalon has an anti-aging effect and is safe for long-term use.

Experiments in mice have clearly shown the inhibitory effect of epitalon on the development of spontaneous breast tumors, and many animal studies have clearly shown other positive effects of epitalon use:

    • Epitalon regulated melatonin and cortisol production in aging monkeys, helping to normalize the circadian rhythm of cortisol secretion.
    • Epitalon helped preserve the morphological structure of the retina in retinitis pigmentosa, a congenital retinal degeneration.
    • Epitalon inhibited the proliferation of colon tumors and increased apoptosis of colon cancer cells in rats.
